Investment objective

This equity fund aims to achieve long-term capital growth and to promote environmental and social characteristics, while respecting risk diversification.

Key features

The fund invests globally in companies that enable an orderly transition towards a net-zero world and focuses on upstream resources mainly in materials and low carbon energy including technologies that reduce the negative environmental impact and promote recycling, with the pillars named “Enabling Materials” and “Low Carbon Energy”.

Approach

The seasoned investment specialist team takes longer-term high-conviction investment decisions based on in-depth analyses. In pursuit of the fund's goal to promote environmental and social characteristics, the team excludes controversial sectors, applies specific ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) criteria to avoid the worst laggards, tracks doubtful activities, and ensures voting as well as engagement with the portfolio companies. The team actively adapts portfolio positions to seize attractive new opportunities while controlling the risks, always in line with their latest assessment of investment conditions.

Key features of Vontobel Fund – Transition Resources

An orderly transition towards a net zero world is materials intensive and requires energy security and stability while scaling up clean alternatives. Asset owners can contribute to accelerate change and benefit from investing in the upstream pillars of the green transition value chain, which spans from basic resources to technology enablers.

The pillars of Vontobel Fund – Transition Resources

The companies we pick for our portfolio contribute to at least one of the upstream pillars of the green transition.

Enabling Materials

As of today, we still need to rely on primary mining to build tomorrow’s net-zero world as the generation of renewable energy requires more input materials compared to fossil fuel energy generation, or a fully electric vehicle uses a multiple of materials compared to an internal combustion engine car. Over time mineral sourcing should come mainly from recycling.

Low Carbon Energy

As of today, fossil fuels are still essential to ensure energy security, stability, and affordability but they result in very different environmental consequences. Over time the energy sector will have to lower the carbon intensity of its energy production and manage a balanced and responsible transition to renewable energy sources.

Our investment process

Our aim is to deliver an unconstrained high-conviction portfolio. This requires an investment process focused on disciplined bottom-up security selection based on in-depth company analyses that integrate financial and sustainability criteria.

Investment team

Our experienced portfolio managers Stephan Eugster and Romain Hohl are responsible for Vontobel Fund – Transition Resources. They are supported by a team of investment experts able to conduct financial as well as sustainability analyses. Being active asset managers, we rely on our own in-house fundamental research.
